Technology Information For TAFE Students @ CHEC

If you are a TAFE student studying at the Coffs Harbour Education Campus, this is the information about technology at this particular campus.


The Technology Service Desk provides support for various technologies and computer systems while also having a wide range of portable equipment available for loan e.g. laptops, cameras, recorders and projectors at the Coffs Harbour Education Campus.

TAFENSW Student Technology Service Desk (State-Wide)

Open from 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday to assist with:  

  • Access to the TAFE Virtual Desktop
  • Installing and accessing Microsoft Teams/Office 365
  • Connecting to the TAFE NSW network
  • Arrangements for TAFE NSW Bring Your Own Device; and
  • Access to learning management platforms (including TAFE Digital Campus, Moodle)
  • Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) using PingID

If students need technical advice, they may:

  • Call the Student Technology Service Desk on 131 601 and select option for ‘Technology Support’

There are two main computer accounts you require to be able to login (they have SEPARATE usernames/passwords):

  1. CHEC Lab Login Account (1st login for on-campus lab computers + print/copy/scan), e.g. jsmith600
    1. Generally, within 48 hours of completing enrolment in a TAFE course at CHEC, you will be able to access the computer resources at the Coffs Harbour Education Campus.

  2. TAFE Login Account (2nd login for Email/WiFi/Student Portal/Moodle/TAFE Digital/TAFE Laptops & TAFE Labs), e.g. john.smithville1
    1. Created as your enrolment has been completed


If you have forgotten your username or password

  1. CHEC Lab Login Account - please contact the CHEC Service Desk, see Service Desk Opening Hours & Contacts

  2. TAFE Login Account
    1. Go to https://my.tafensw.edu.au, click on Forgot your password? and follow the prompts
    2. Visit TAFE Student Central Admin (G.LG.7) or Library (E Block Level 1)

Extra Information: Connect to Staff & Student Wireless (TAFENSW)

This setup will allow you to access WiFi at any TAFE campus.

You can’t use your temporary TAFE password, you would have changed the one issued to you via http://my.tafensw.edu.au first.

Sign In

  1. Click anywhere on the screen
  2. Type in your CHEC Lab Login Account details e.g. xxxxx600
  3. Click on the arrow button

Sign Out (Log Off)

This ensures that it has logged off correctly and you can login to another computer

  1. Make sure all programs/windows are closed

  2. Hold CTRL + ALT + DELETE on the keyboard

  3. Click on the Sign Out option

  4. Wait until the screen appears with the date & time before leaving the computer

Specialist Lab Sign In & TAFE Laptops

There are also several specialist computer labs at CHEC (A.1.12, A.1.16/13, A.1.5, B.G.9, I.G.13 & S.G.6) that you use your TAFE Login Account details e.g. john.smithville1@studytafensw.edu.au

Student Portal

The Student Portal allows you to access your student email, eLearning resources and enrolment.

  1. http://my.tafensw.edu.au
  2. Type your TAFE Account details e.g. john.smithville1
  3. Click on the Log In button
  4. Click on Agree to the Terms of Use

Email

From the Student Portal (http://my.tafensw.edu.au), click on the Email, O365 & Teams link

What is my email address? 

  • It is your TAFE Login Account username followed by @studytafensw.edu.au e.g. john.smithville1@studytafensw.edu.au

Learner Portal

Learner Portal allows access to your grades, enrolment details, financial information & transcripts. So for the Student Portal (http://my.tafensw.edu.au), click on North Coast

Depending on your course, it MAY involve using one of these platforms, your teacher will advise.

U DriveThis location is where you can save your files and login to any computer on-campus and see them, 1GB limitCHEC Lab Computer

REMINDER:  USB and External Hard Drives are only to be used as a backup location (second copy) or a temporary transfer method.

Enrolled TAFE students can access free Microsoft Office for use on their home devices (up to 5 devices desktop, laptops & tablets).

  1. Visit http://Office.com > Sign In with your TAFE Account Username with @studytafensw.edu.au e.g. john.smithville1@studytafensw.edu.au
  2. Click the Install Office drop-down menu button > select Premium Office Apps
  3. After the Office 365 installer has been downloaded, open the installer and follow the step by step instructions to install it. (You can find the Installer/Setup Wizard in your Downloads folder)

There is some equipment on-campus that you can borrow to assist with your studies. Where & what equipment can I borrow?

  • Backup – store your files in at least two separate locations i.e. U drive, USB device or Cloud storage
  • USB Devices – please note that these devices can corrupt easily. Saving assignments only to these devices is not a recommended practice. Please return any lost USB devices to Technology Service Desk in E.G.19
