Publishing H5Ps in Blackboard (copied to live site)

This article covers the following topics:

Before you publish a H5P

Adding Metadata

If you intend to share the H5P with others in the future, it is useful to add Metadata information. Click the Metadata tag near the H5P title to open the Metadata screen.

From this screen you can add the license information, data source, author details, and other license information.

Turning off the Toolbar

Before you publish a H5P for student use, it is important to turn off the options to Allow users to Download the content and the Display Embed button as these allow students access to your H5P file. The easiest way to do this is to uncheck the Toolbar Below Content option. These options are located under the Display Options of H5P which are located at the bottom of the H5P authoring screen.

You should not use H5P for summative assessment

It is critical to be aware that H5P is currently not suited for examination purposes as it is possible for students to cheat. This may be fixed in future revisions of the software, in which case this page will be updated.

A note about sizing

By default, a H5P added to a Blackboard Item using the + Plus button has a width of 779px and a height of 600px. You can change this from the LTI settings of the H5P options. If you prefer that the H5P fills the entire width of the browser window, follow the process below on using H5P embed code. Using either the + Plus button or embed code will create an effective interactive experience for students: there is also the option to add custom sizing with HTML, however that is beyond the scope of this article.

Publishing Options

There are three publishing options available when you finish creating your H5P:

  • Unpublished: Content can't be inserted into LMS.
  • Protected: Content can be inserted into LMS.
  • Public: Visible to the public using a content link. Content can be inserted into LMS and embedded.

When including H5P content in your Blackboard site, the recommendation is to use Protected mode. However, if you wish to share H5P content outside of a Blackboard learning site, have more control over how H5P looks on a page, or be able to turn off user tracking, then using the Public publishing option will allow the H5P content to be viewed without requiring a login. Public doesn’t mean that the content will be available on a public repository. The use of public publishing is not generally recommended for unit learning sites.

Public H5Ps are not tracked

Only Protected content will interact with the Blackboard Grade Centre. Note that the following publishing options can be added to Blackboard, but no results will register in the Grade Centre and no H5P reports will be generated.

Publishing a H5P using the Plus + button

After you finish creating a H5P interactive, you can add this to an item in your Blackboard (Bb) learning site. This is the preferred method for adding H5P to a learning site for students. It provides a handy report of student achievement for graded H5P interactives, and an edit button that makes it easier to make quick changes later. If you would like to access reports from your blackboard site instead of h5p.com, you will need to use the Plus button to include the H5P into Blackboard.

Scores in Grade Centre

When you add H5P's to your blackboard site, remember to double check your Grade Centre! If the H5P is integrated in the Grade Centre, make sure to set it so the quiz is formative, that is, set "Include this column in Grade Center calculations" to no in column information. For more information on how to setup your Grade Centre, see our articles on the Grade Centre.

Students saving progress

For some H5P content, you can have the student's progress save throughout. This option is available under LTI settings. Selecting the tick box Allow logged-in users to resume content means that if a student's internet drops out while engaging with a H5P, the H5P will resume from where they were up to.

This option is currently available for interactive videos, course presentations, and quizzes. This data is retained for 30 days. Do note, editing the H5P will remove any autosave data associated.

Ensure you save

You must click the Save button for the changes in permission to be applied to a H5P. Note that any user with this link is able to access the H5P without requiring a login.

Advanced: Publishing a H5P with embed code

Some people prefer the look of using embed code to include H5Ps within their blackboard sites.

You don't have to use HTML!

Using embed code is considered an advanced option: using the + Plus button to include H5P content is always an effective method.

If you would like to explore using embed code as an option, the following video steps through the process:

(Please note - it's better to refer to the Online version rather than export, as it's always up to date)
