Installing Grammarly browser extensions and apps

Grammarly has a range of different browser extensions, plug-ins and mobile apps. Refer to this guide for installation instructions.

Step 1: Save any current Office files you have open then Quit all of the Office apps you have open (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)


Step 2: Open Word and create a blank Word document


Step 3: Sign out of Office with the blank Word document open




Step 4: After signing out of Office, select the Insert. Then Select Get Add-ins


Step 5: Search the store for Grammarly and add the Add-in


Step 6: Sign into the Grammarly Add-in


Step 7: After signing into Grammarly, Quit Word and re-open Word


Step 8: Sign into Office to activate and license the O365 applications


Step 9: Create a new blank Word document. You should now see two Grammarly add in options - one will work, the other will give you an error message below.


Please take note which Grammarly icon is working and not working. To remove the correct add-in in the next step


Step 10: To remove the unwanted Grammarly add-in:

  1. Select Word in the top left corner
  2. Select Preferences
  3. Select Ribbon & Toolbar
  4. In the right column you will see the Home drop down option. You should see the two Grammarly options.
  5. Select the unwanted Grammarly add-in then select the left arrow to remove it from the Home ribbon



Step 1: Navigate to Grammarly portal:  https://app.grammarly.com/


Step 2:  Click the Log In button and sign into Grammarly with your SCU email address (you'll then be redirected and prompted to login using your regular SCU username and password).



Step 3:  From the left menu, click on Apps



Step 4: Choose the desktop app for MacOS.

Click the red install button



Grammarly offers a Desktop app version.

To install the Desktop application

Step 1: Navigate to the Grammarly portal:  https://app.grammarly.com/


Step 2:  Click the Log In button and sign into Grammarly with your SCU email address (you'll then be redirected and prompted to login using your regular SCU username and password).


Step 3:  From the left menu, click on Apps




Step 4: Choose Grammarly for Windows

Click the blue install button. Download the file and check your Download folder for the GrammarlyInstaller



Step 5: After you install Grammarly, the app will redirect you to sign in on the web browser. Then you click on Open Grammarly as in the images below. Always use your SCU email account.






Step 6: Your Grammarly is ready to use






Grammarly offers a Microsoft Office plug-in.

To install the Microsoft Office plug-in or Desktop application


Step1: Navigate to the Grammarly portal: https://www.grammarly.com/office-addin


Step 2: Click on Get the add-in



Step 3: If the download did not start, click on the red rectangle (image below)




Step 4: Go to your Downloads folder, look for the file GrammarlyAddInSetup.exe, and double-click on the file for installation. If the double-click does not work. Right-click on the file > Run as administrator


Step 5: Click on get started, then Next and Yes




Step 6: Select the apps that you desire to install Grammarly (Options available: Word and Outlook)




Step 7: Restart your Apps for the effects; make sure you save your documents before closing the Microsoft Word
