H5P Documentation Tool
What is a Documentation Tool?
The Documentation Tool is a H5P that can be integrated into a Blackboard module which allows students to type short answers in response to statements or questions. The students' answer can then either be submitted or exported to a Word document. It is similar to Microsoft Forms or Google Forms but can be embedded seamlessly into Blackboard and can be used in various ways.
How can using a Documentation Tool assist learning?
The Documentation Tool can be an excellent way to assist students in scaffolding assessments and may also be ideal for shorter reflection tasks as it can be embedded seamlessly into a Blackboard module after. When deciding whether or not to use the Documentation Tool it is important to consider the Unit Learning Outcomes.
While using the Documentation Tool for scaffolding written assessments may be useful for students it may not be used for full assessments as written assessments at SCU must always be submitted through a text-matching software (currently Turnitin) (SCU Text Matching Software Policy).
What can the Documentation Tool be used for?
The Documentation Tool can be used in a number of different ways. It works particularly well for scaffolding written assessments or research projects along with reflective tasks whether it is reflecting on an article/video or perhaps a professional placement/experience. When deciding whether to include the Documentation Tool in a module it might be useful to consider:
- How will this assist the students in achieving the unit learning outcomes?
- How will this enrich the students' learning experience?
- How would you like the students to benefit from using the Documentation Tool?
The examples below illustrate different ways of using the Documentation Tool.
Example 1
The example below is for a Law unit. In this example the Documentation Tool is used for the students to write notes regarding a specific legal dispute to then export as a document and bring to class (workshop/tutorial) for further discussion.
Example 2: Nursing

Provide instructions for students
When using the Documentation Tool it is important to provide clear instructions for students on how to use the Documentation Tool including whether or not they should export or submit their document. It is also useful to communicate to students why they are doing the activity i.e. what they are meant to take away from the exercise and how it is connected to the unit learning outcomes.
Video
If you integrate a Documentation Tool into your module and would like to keep track of how many students are engaging in the activity, it is important to communicate to the students that they must submit their document as well as export it to pdf. If they simply export it, even if they have completed the activity, it will not show up in reports unless it is submitted.
A "save" function is available for the Documentation Tool which saves students' responses so that they don't necessarily have to complete and export their responses in one sitting. The "save" function has to be made available manually by ticking the "Allow logged-in users to resume content" box under "LTI Settings". See the video above for detailed instructions.
